Temperance

An angel stands with one foot on land and one foot in water. Wings extended, calm-faced, the angel pours liquid from one cup to another in a steady stream that defies gravity. A path leads up the mountain to a crown of light in the distance.

Numbered 14, Temperance follows Death. The ending has happened; now the integration begins. Where Death cleared the field, Temperance blends what remains into something new. Patience is the work.

Its element is fire, its ruler is Sagittarius, and its Hebrew letter is Samekh — the support, the prop. Temperance is what holds you together while you become something different.

Upright, Temperance means alchemy, patience, and the right proportion. The card asks whether you can hold opposites in dialogue long enough for something new to emerge — without forcing the synthesis.

In love: the patient blending of two lives. For singles, often the meeting of someone whose differences from you are exactly the differences that make integration possible. For couples, the season of weaving — daily life, family of origin, finances, dreams — into something that contains both partners.

Loss of balance: the angel's stream has broken. The two cups are no longer in conversation. The reversed Temperance points to where two important parts of your life have stopped feeding each other.
