Vedic Astrology & the 27 Nakshatras

Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, reads the sky against the fixed stars — the sidereal zodiac — rather than the tropical framework used in the West. Inside that framework sits a finer grid: 27 nakshatras, each a 13°20′ lunar mansion with its own deity, ruling planet, and mythology. Where your Western Sun describes your core will, your Vedic Moon nakshatra describes how you emotionally meet the world. The nakshatra is the real scalpel of Jyotish — older than the twelve signs, more specific than any solar profile, and rooted in the Moon's 27-day cycle through the stars.

Each nakshatra belongs to a ruling planet that shapes its texture — Mars fires some, Venus softens others, Ketu dissolves a few into mystery. Every nakshatra also carries a gana (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa) that signals whether its native moves through the world as an inspirer, a human operator, or a challenger of convention. The four padas (quarters) inside each nakshatra map onto signs of the navamsa chart, giving a fourfold refinement that's invisible from a Sun-sign reading.

Classical Jyotish uses the nakshatra of the Moon at birth — your janma nakshatra — to time the Vimshottari dasha system, the 120-year life-period sequence that shows which planet is writing the script at each phase of life. Every page below explores one nakshatra's core identity, relational pattern, career pull, and shadow edge, and tells you where it overlaps the Western tropical sign so you can hold both maps at once.
